This is Carl's very first color art work. After creating drawings in black pen and ink for more than a year, Carl decided to try playing with some color pens. This drawing took only a hour and was inspired by some computer clip art. But Carl says it was this single color drawing that pushed him to try painting later in the year.

As we've said before, Carl's art seems to return again and again to trees in landscapes. And for some reason the Aspen tree is one of Carl's favorites. Could it be that subconsciously this is what caused Carl to select the "Aspen Resort" for his first trip to Northern Minnesota a few years ago? Who knows. But Carl says the black and white trunks of Aspen and Birch trees give them unique and curious contrast values in landscape paintings.
