Carl takes photographs to use as Reference Photos in his Art

Carl often uses photographs as references when he creates a drawing or a painting. Copyright laws and the need for originality prevent artists from using photographs other people own without first obtaining rights or a license to reproduce elements from the photos.

Carl. like most artists, has learned that unless a particular photograph "grabs you" it will be impossible to interpret it into a drawing or painting that will move its viewers.

This section contains a collection of photographs Carl thinks have value as art reference photographs. Although these photos are copyright, Carl will grant artists limited permission to reproduce them in their art with little more than the requirement to credit Carl for the photos and refer interested people to this website. If you would like to use any of the photos seen here for your artwork please contact Carl and let him know.

Each photograph seen here is available in high resolution (just click on any given image to download the original digital photo image).

The Moon

For Christmas 2003 Carl purchased a digital camera that permitted him, for the first time, to photograph the moon so it gave up some of its detail.

This photo was taken on a clear night from Carl's backyard in Camarillo. Even in southern California the night's give up a bright moon once in a while.

A Full Moon a couple of weeks later...

"Rattlesnake Balls"

A tree known as an Amber tree produces seed balls that hang in late Fall and early winter (Carl thinks the Amber tree is a cross between a sycamore and an elm, but he is not certain). Locals sometimes call them "Rattlesname Balls" because of what it feels like when you step on them barefoot walking across the yard.

I have stayed in the Timberwolf Cabin, the Osprey Cabin, and the Coyote Cabin. The Coyote has been my favorite so far. It is off the beaten path and has its own fire pit and picnic table area. Many of the creatures photographed on these pages - and several I didn't get photographs of - appeared out in this front yard just off the deck of the cabin.
