[Days End Session 2]

November 27, 2004 - See Narrative Below

"Day's End", Acrylic Painting
18" X 24" Stretched Canvas

This is a progression of photographs taken at intervals of about 2 hours as this relaxing sunset lake scene develops. Carl wasn't sure what media to use to produce the dramatic colors of this image. He started with watercolor (see photo below) to figure out exactly how to mix the colors (a color study). He quickly discovered, though, that he wanted to use a "wet on wet" approach to make the sky look more like it did the night he took the reference photo. So he switched over to acrylic and tried again, this time to his liking.

Here is what the watercolor color study looked like before Carl switched to acrylic on this project:

One night last summer when Carl was vacationing at the Aspen Resort in Northern Minnesota (Orr, MN), he was sitting on the dock taking photos of a peaceful sunset. The resort owner had been out in his boat with his daughters during the evening, and he returned to the dock while Carl was photographing. He apologized to Carl for messing up the bay with waves as he returned, but it turns out Carl's favorite photo from that evening was the one with the waves. Carl is hoping that he can faithfully reproduce the sunset's drama and the feeling of contentment he knew the evening he saw this image.

This painting is being created on an 18" x 24" stretched canvas.

This project is an original acrylic painting based on a photograph Carl took while vacationing in Minnesota in 2004.
