      When Carl started to draw he rushed out an bought about a dozen how-to books. The few that were written by Claudia Nice let Carl feel like he was creating something worthwhile right from the start. These contrasted starkly with the more "naturalistic" quick scribbling style of many others. The Mt. Hood drawing above (a demonstration from a Claudia Nice book) was selected by Carl's fellow workers for the department Christmas Card cover in 2001.
