This drawing represents another first in Carl's education. This is the first drawing he did of a person that retained some semblance of humanity when it was finished. Although Carl was not at all happy with this creation, it did give him a glimmer of hope that it might be possible to make a realistic drawing or painting of a person (compare this first drawing to what Carl produced 5 months later in the watercolor paintings of his grandchildren elsewhere on this site).
