[Cougar Session 3]

July 26, 2003 - See Narrative Below Image

Cougar, Acrylic
14" X 18" Canvas

After sketching the Cougar onto the canvas (in the last photo) the canvas was washed with transparent burnt sienna acrylic so the sketch still showed through. The sienna wash is to help figure out the colors and values (as opposed to working on a white background). In the final painting the Siena wash is over painted with a more opaque and cooler color wash for the final frame. This is the first time Carl has tried to carry forward the fine details of an underlying sketch. He says it is an interesting process because the sketch is obliterated by the opaque acrylic paint. This means the painted outline must hold the sketch's detail.

This project is taken from a book authored by Kalon Baughan, "Painting the Faces of Wildlife"
