[Persistence Session 2]

October 5, 2004 - See Narrative Below

"Persistence", Watercolor
11" X 14" Watercolor Paper

This is a progression of photographs taken at intervals of about 2 hours as this painting of sky, water and rock develops. Carl started this as a "fast and sloppy" watercolor project that should give him a contrast to the slow, lengthy detailed project he just completed with a detailed oil painting.

Carl's friend and co-worker, John Ehde, recently snapped some photos while touring Hawaii. When Carl saw the photo this project is based upon he immediately asked John for permission to use it. Carl says it was an interesting shot but there was no tedious detail he could see. This is an image Carl thinks he can recreate fast and fun.

As Carl worked on the sketch tonight he carefully studied the photograph. The scene left an impression on Carl that caused him to name this project "Persistence". The continual effort of the ocean on the lava shore goes on day in and day out, washing and carving, as a beach is slowly created. The reference photo has a couple of tiny areas where there is enough sand to support some green vegetation on this young shoreline. Below is a better shot of the sketch itself.

The sketch actually only took Carl about an hour this evening. The next page in the Easel Cam shows how he spent the second hour, starting with a quick color wash on the sky and ocean.

This painting is being created onto Montval (R) Watercolor Block (Canson) 12X16 140 lb. Cold Press White Paper

This project is an original watercolor painting Carl made based on a reference image of a Hawaiian Shore.
