[Amethyst Session 5]

                      June 5, 2004 - See Narrative Below

"Amethyst Sundown", Pen and Ink
8" X 10" Drawing Paper

During this evening's session Carl finished the sky and starting drawing in the grass above the lake. Carl's artistic freedom kicked in when he decided on the fly tonight to add details and features to this hillsides in the background. The reference photo has fog and haze that pretty much hides the distant hills below where they meet the sky. But Carl had some fun with light and values adding some hills above the grass.

Carl commented this evening "even though this drawing is really simple, it is not really fast." Making dots one at a time all the while varying their density trying to bring out light and darkness takes time. Carl said that unlike his earlier pen and ink drawings where he used only black ink and an extremely fine point technical pen, using color felt tip pens creates much larger stippling dots so you really have to pay attention so you don't get them too thick and ruin the whole effect.

Oh, one other thing: Carl laughed when he photographed the drawing this evening. "Colored dots really mess with a digital camera's computerized brain." It is hard to get an accurate reproduction of this drawing in a photograph.

This experimental project uses a stippling technique
with a "bazillion" dots to to create the image.

This project is an original drawing Carl made based on a reference image of a purple sunset.
