"Amethyst Sundown", Pen and Ink
8" X 10" Drawing Paper

It's done. Carl finished it up this evening. Although Carl doesn't really like this drawing much, his wife Sharlene thinks its "peaceful" and she likes it. It was a fun project for Carl as he admits he likes to experiment with different methods and techniques. This is the first detailed color pen and ink drawing Carl has done. In the past he's used black ink and produced black and white pen and ink images. Carl said that this drawing taught him more about value and color.

Before sitting down to draw this evening Carl went to the art store and selected an entirely new media for his next project: water mixable oil paints. Carl has enjoyed oil painting in the past, but he always had to set up shop in the garage when he worked with solvents and mineral spirits. The water mixable oil lets the artist avoid solvents and spirits, and wash his brushes with soap and water. Carl says he's read that the water mixable oils are supposed to act like oil paint in every other way: slow drying (weeks), textured brush strokes, and the luminousity that sets oil apart from every other media.

Color Pen and Ink Drawing

This project is an original drawing Carl made based on a reference image of a purple sunset.
