October 21, 2004 - It's Done! See Narrative Below

"Persistence", Watercolor
11" X 14" Watercolor Paper

It's Done! After only 14 hours Carl has completed this watercolor painting. In keeping with the fast and sloppy style Carl set out with on this painting, he played some more with the slope and greenery and then declared it is done (not nitpicking every little detail to death trying to get absolute realism).

Carl says this painting was very enjoyable as a relaxing, fun, art project. He said he'd recommend something like this to anyone who wants to "take art for a spin".

"Find some simple reference image that doesn't contain any fine detail - something that has a sky, water, and land but no element that requires exact reproduction for success, and then paint away." Carl recommends using watercolor - maybe just an inexpensive watercolor set - with some heavy cold press paper made for watercolor. Splash in the background washes and then ad successive layers to bring the painting to life. Note that where you want your whitest whites do not put any undercoating of color. As you paint in the whites use a wet mix to pull in the background color from the adjacent water area.

Drop Carl an email and let him know what you think of this painting.

This painting is being created onto Montval (R) Watercolor Block (Canson) 12X16 140 lb. Cold Press White Paper

This project is an original watercolor painting Carl made based on a reference image of a Hawaiian Shore.
