[Frozen Tranquility 5]

                      March 8, 2005 - See Narrative Below

"Frozen Tranquility", Acrylic Painting
18" X 24" Stretched Canvas

With a couple of hours this evening Carl adjusted the sky (to add more light behind where the tree goes on the upper left quadrant of the canvas) and he worked some more on the snowy area across the bottom of the painting. Making the sky lighter without upsetting the clear sky look was tricky, and Carl tried something he hasn't done before this painting. He mixed a little Titanium White into a larger amount of Clear Gesso and then carefully used a wet on wet approach to add the lighter area. It still looks pretty much like a clear sky (often when you add any white paint to a blue sky you end up with clouds whether you want them or not!). The snowy area across the bottom will take more time, but he's trying to get depth by making the elements close to the horizon very tiny and fine. You can begin to see a 3D effect as you "walk out under the clouds".

This painting is being created on an 18" x 24" stretched canvas.

This project is an original acrylic painting based on a photograph Carl took in rural Southwestern Iowa.
