"Pelicans' Kitchen" After this evening's painting time, Carl says now he can see how the painting is going to come together. He actually spent more like 3 hours on these changes, rather than the normal 2 hours he generally paints at a time. Here he has laid in the lake and the tree posts. You can also see the beginnings of the sandy road out front, and a telephone pole in the right middle (that holds up one of those bright yard lights). What Carl finds really interesting in this process is that much, if not most, of what you see here is going to be covered up by tree branches and a big bush that sits right in the middle of the scene. Carl pondered the idea of moving the bush for a while, but then thought better of it. After thinking about that he told me "I pick subjects for my paintings based on photographs that somehow caught my eye. I don't understand exactly what it is about them that set them apart from the dozens of other scenes captured in the camera - but I really hesitate when I think about significantly altering the scene because I'm afraid I'll loose that special something that made the scene special in the first place." This project is another original painting
inspired by a vacation photograph
