Carl's Summer Vacation 2004
Bird Pictures...

It's called "Pelican Lake"!

This guy kept eyeing the fish I was catching...

Pelicans are an odd bunch of birds... Each morning the dockboy would take buckets of fish parts from the fish cleaning house over to the rocks where the Pelicans live. Some mornings the Pelicans would send "an advance party" over to the dock to escort the dockboy as he brought breakfast.

 Pelicans on the Rocks...

This is one of the rocks the Pelican's call home...

The Pelican's aren't hard to find. They often swam or flew around while I fished in the bay near the resort.

Pelican Parade!

These birds love to play "follow the leader"...

This train of Pelicans actually stretched a lot farther to the left than this photo shows..

 Geese

There is a rather large community of geese that call Pelican Lake home too...

I was surprised to stumble upon a very large family of geese since I'd never seen them on Pelican Lake before. They're not quiet birds either!

More Geese...

 Bald Eagle

The Eagles were nesting this year during Carl's visit...

I hope to go through my photographs and find one or two of the better eagle shots to use as reference photos for a future painting. They were difficult to photograph because they're usually quite a distance away and the boat never stops moving. This one was taken with a 12X optical zoom lens that had electronic stabilization. Nonetheless these are magnificent birds - certainly worthy of being a national emblem.

               Loons

   Minnesota's state bird...

These birds have a loud, lonesome, evening call...

The loon's cry marks the end of the day. It is a distinctively north woods sound that signals a peaceful night beginning.
