 Carl's Summer Vacation 2003
Fish, Fish and More Fish...

You can rent a simple boat, a pontoon boat, or a bass boat. Carl rented the Lund Rebel boat (Aspen Resort has two of them they rent).

For the past few years I've rented the Lund Rebel bass boat. It has an electric trolling motor, a live well, and storage bays on each side to hold the poles and tackle. The boat is also equipped with lights so you can stay out fishing after dark without having to rig up some "Mickey-mouse" flashlight arrangement.

 Bluegill

Pelican Lake produces some very large bluegill and sunfish.

This year I caught Bluegill, Crappie, Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, and Perch. In previous years, depending on the weather and fishing conditions, I have caught Largemouth Bass and Bullhead. Occasionally the lake produces a Walleye Pike, but I haven't yet pulled one out of this lake.

Crappie

Carl's friend Elmer showed him how and where to catch Crappie on the Lake this year. Elmer is the resort owner's father. He has a  nice boat and a warm greeting.

I had a delightful experience this year when I came back in from fishing one evening and Ray called me up to the lodge for a drink. I was reintroduced to Elmer. They asked how fishing was that evening and I said I'd caught several Northern but no Crappie yet. Elmer asked if I wanted to go out fishing for 10 minutes - he'd show me how and where to catch Crappie. So off we went. He took me out in his boat just several hundred feet into the bay. There he let me use his fishing pole that had a small yellow head jig with a white skirt on it. We threw it out into the shallow water and sat. And, after 10 minutes we came back into the dock. But that's all it took. The next morning and many times later during the week I sat in the bay with "Elmer's Jig" and pulled in one Crappie after another. Actually I found Crappie in several places later in the week. And these are no small Crappie either. Most are 10 to 12 inches, just right for filleting (although I put what I catch back in the lake for another day).

They just Jump into the Boat!

Catching Fish on Pelican Lake is pretty straight forward. Carl has experience spending entire days on a lake without catching anything, but that's never happened on Pelican Lake.

I took a lot of photographs this year, especially of the fish. My dad always tells me to takes lots of fish pictures. As you can see here, though, fish don't like posing for photographs. This perch just wouldn't hold still so I just took his picture flopping and then threw him back in  the water.
