Carl's Summer Vacation 2003
Critters and Birds

A Deer out the Front Window

This is what Carl saw out his front window at lunch time one day.

There are a lot of deer around Pelican Lake. One evening after sunset I stepped out onto the front deck of my cabin to see a buck coming across the lawn toward me. He actually ran toward me until he was 20 feet from me or so, and then he stopped. We stared at each  other for a moment and then he went off into the woods. I also saw deer along the shore while I was fishing in the evening.

 Bunny Rabbit

If you keep your eyes open there are animals all around. This bunny was just outside Carl's door one morning. .

I tried to have my camera with me most of the time because you never know what opportunity will present itself for a great photo. This was just one such occasion when I was walking up to my cabin and found this little guy nibbling on the clover off my deck. He kind of froze when he saw me thinking maybe I hadn't noticed him. So I just continued walking up to him clicking photos until I was practically standing next to him. Cute little guy. Might work for  a painting?

Loon

The Loon's cry is one of those distinctive sounds that let you know you are in the North Woods.

This bird thought I was intruding into its territory because it circled my boat crying into the evening. The Loon is Minnesota's State Bird (and you thought it was the mosquito).

 The Lake's Namesake: Pelicans

Just across the bay from the Aspen Resort are some rocks that provide the Lake's pelicans with a roosting perch. The dock boys run the fish cleaning remains out to the rock a couple of times each day. The pelicans make a lot of noise and circle until the dock boy leaves, and then its suppertime.

The pelicans, ducks, loons, and other water fowl keep the bay alive as you fish and enjoy the scenery. There are seagulls too. On shore I had a couple of Robins that kept me company out at the picnic table in front of my cabin along with some pretty little bright yellow birds that looked a little like canaries. Next year I'll have to get a birders guide so I can figure out what all the various birds are.
