Carl's Summer Vacation 2003
Minnesota Sunsets

A cold Sunset

Each night when the sun sets conditions are right for another "Kodak Moment". Carl watches for that pretty sunset that might make a great painting. Here are a few shots from this year.

Even on an otherwise commonplace Minnesota evening the sunset often surprises my senses with a parade of color. I've discovered after several years watching these sunsets that timing is everything. The idea is to start shooting the sunset early and then continue every couple of minutes until you're sure it has reached its absolute prettiest display.

 A wet evening Rainbow

It is a big mistake to become disappointed with Minnesota's unpredictable weather. This photo was taken on an evening when Carl fished through a rainstorm (without any lightning around).

I almost missed this rainbow scene because the fish were biting so well I was thoroughly engrossed in casting again and again. Then I spun around in the boat and saw the rainbow. I actually got a collection of photos during this sunset at various zoom levels, with one and then two boats in the scene. This sunset will probably be used in some upcoming art endeavor. I must make a note to myself for next year also: go out fishing even when it is cold and yucky. As long as the wind and/or lightning doesn't pose some safety concern the fishing and scenery are at their peak in bad weather.

Sun into Thunder

This was one of those sunsets with the sounds of very distant Thunder.

In previous years I've taken similar photographs where the sun's light creates a path across the water. In its best form the path of light can approach the dynamics of fireworks on the water.

 A Peaceful Sunset

Some sunsets are very peaceful. They seem to announce a quiet night of sleep. This shot was taken from the boat in the bay not far from the dock at the resort.

A week in the North Woods almost just isn't enough. Each sunset is bittersweet. Its enjoyable because after a hard day of play you are indeed ready for sleep. But it is also a reminder that another day is done - you're one day closer to the end of your visit.

A quiet bay before Sunset

The lake is probably the most beautiful when it lays out flat. The water takes on an almost black color even though it is very clear.

I leave you with this last image. It reminds me of the absolutely peaceful state I get into after several days on Pelican Lake. I can only end this collection of memories with an invitation to you - and a reminder to me- to enjoy (again) the serenity and excitement of a week in the great outdoors. I'm sure there are many destinations and resorts where you can achieve a "decompression" of your own. But I've found the Aspen Resort in Orr, Minnesota, to offer a clean, quiet, and very well kept up resort. I've been there in June, July, and August through the years and have never found a week I didn't enjoy (although I've learned to expect the unexpected with the weather).
